HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR SILKS
SAVE YOUR SILKS WITHOUT ANY FUSS
- Never store a silk saree with zari work in polythene bags as the chemicals in the plastic tend to react with the zari, making it black.
- Always keep the silks wrapped up in cloth preferably muslin or natural fibres. Avoid synthetic fibres at all costs.
- When storing the silks for over six months, wrap them in a cloth and throw in a few pieces of MULAITI (tree roots) as they preserve the silk and keep away termites and other insects.
- The silks should be washed within six months of buying them irrespective of whether they have been worn or not.
- The silks should be washed with plain cold water.
- Only use mild wool detergent if there is a satin.
- The silks should never be bundled and kept wet for a long time. Also, never bundle them with inferior materials.
- The pallu and the border should be washed separately from the rest of the sari.
- If the silk gets stained it is advisable to wash only the stained part immediately, and not the entire sari, with plain water.
- The silks should be dried in shade and the direct sunlight should be avoided. Direct sunlight would ruin the silk.
- The silks should be ironed on the minimum heat.
- Silks with the zari work should be ironed from the reverse side.
- The silks should be stored in wooden almirah rather than a steel cupboard.
- Kora silk sarees should be hung in cloth bags. It is advised not to fold them and kept.
