It is unbelievable that god has blessed us with virtues and immense qualities of getting healed by simply touching our fingertips with one another in some specific pattern that makes a mudra. In ancient times our sages used these mudras. Our physical body is made up of five elements of which the entire universe is made up of i.e. fire, air, earth, space and water. In our hand each finger represents one element.

·        Thumb represents fire element (AGNI)
·        Index finger represents air element(VAYU)
·        Middle finger represents space element (AAKASH)
·        Ring finger represents earth element (PRITHVI)
·        Little finger represents water element.  (JALA)

Any imbalance in these elements causes diseases and ailments. So, to get rid of the ailments and becoming healthy we have to practice some specific methods of touching and aligning our fingers to make different mudras called hasta mudras. By practicing this we can balance our five elements and maintain our body free of ailments. The mudras activate the minor chakras in the body which brings positive changes in our body. It strengthens the body immunity and help the body to fight against the ailment of its own.

MUDRA THERAPY is a non – medical mode of treatment without harming. Mudras are easy to perform anytime. A mudra is an alignment which increases and direct the energy flow and connects the body parts to the brain which stimulates the reflexes to the brain.

FIRE ELEMENT:
Fire produces heat and radiates light. It represents energy and passion. It represents body temperature, warmth and metabolism. Fire works on digestive system causing thirst, hunger, digestion of food and its assimilation. Disorders like indigestion, loss of appetite and excessive fat deposition can be cured by manipulating and balancing the fire element. Fire is also associated with vision because of its property of giving light. Person with strong fire element are active, enthusiastic and creative. An excessive of it brings aggression, impatience and impulsive behavior. So, it is very important to balance this element.

AIR ELEMENT
It has the properties to move fluently and frequently. Air element is the manifestation of movement, freshness, communication, thoughts, emotions and intelligence. It can not be seen but sensed. All voluntary and non- voluntary movements of our body are affected by air. Vibrations in cosmos and in the human body are because of air. Air element is related to the impulses along the sensory nerves.
Lack of air element causes:
FROZEN SHOULDER AND PARALYSIS
EXCESSIVE OF this element causes PARKINSON DISEASE

AKASH ELEMENT
The space element of our body which is represented as the bodily cavities. It is the essence of the emptiness. Space is cold, light, immobile and is omnipresent. It is expressed within the empty spaces of our body. The hollow of our buccal cavity, thoracic cavity, nasal cavities, ear cavity, empty intestines, blood vessels, bladder, and the lungs are filled with the space. Any fault or vitiation of this element in our body results in the increase or decrease of space. Space creates the room for other elements to act in the body. Hearing depends on the space element because this element is associated with sound and all other hearing ailments like ear pain are relieved by balancing this space.

FOR EXAMPLE:
·        TINNITUS is due to reduction of space
·        Any hole in any body parts
·        PARKINSON disease is due to increase in space element
·        VATA DOSHA can be controlled by preventing the space to increase.

EARTH ELEMENT
This element represents the solid state of matter. It forms base and foundation for everything It represents strength, abundance, stability and wealth. In our body, the parts such as bones, teeth, cells and tissues, nails, cartilage, skin and muscles etc. are the manifestations of earth element. It is responsible for the body mass. Earth element is nurturing in order to achieve harmony, rootedness and stability. People with strong element are usually warm, kind and supportive. An excess of this element causes obesity where as deficient causes weight loss. It shows strength, stubbornness, slow and dull, heaviness and mainly the holding capacity of our body.
INSUFFICIENT EARTH ELEMENT CAUSES FEW PROBLEMS:
1.WEAKNESS IN BONES, NAILS AND HAIR
2.UNABLE TO HOLD URINE
3.NIGHT FALLS
4.TREMORS OF HANDS OR OTHER BODY PARTS
5.EXCESSIVE BLEEDING DURING MENSTRUAL CYCLE


WATER ELEMENT
Water represents the liquid state. It is the constituent of jelly like substance present with in the cells, tears, blood, saliva, sweat, digestive juices, urine  and cerebrospinal fluid. It helps in combining anything with another object. A person with strong water element uses energy, time, contact and money wisely. It represents intelligence, wisdom, flexibility, calmness and softness. Water is related with taste so as to tongue. Without water tongue cannot recognize the taste.
PROBLEMS RELATED TO INSUFFICIENT WATER ELEMENT:
  • LUBRICATION OF JOINTS i.e. GREASING PROBLEM
  • EXCESSIVE THIRST
  • ANY TYPE OF BURNING SENSATION e.g. ACIDITY
  • AGGRESSIVE NATURE
  • DISORDERS OF WATER METABOLISM (DEHYDRATION OR WATER RETENTION)
HOW TO PRACTICE  MUDRA

All the mudras should be performed with both the hands.

If we touch any finger-tip to the tip of thumb, it increases the element of that finger whereas touching the tip of the finger to the base of the thumb reduces that element.

The light touch of the tips is sufficient while performing mudras. No pressure is required.
Mudras can be practiced at anytime, anywhere.

Mudras can be done in any body position (lying, sitting, walking, standing etc.)

All of the mudras should be practiced at least for 45 minutes daily or in 3 sessions of 15 minutes each at least for 15 days to get the results.

Previous medicines should not be stopped while doing mudras. The dosage of medicines can be reduced by doing these mudras after consulting your physician. There will be a time when you will have no requirement of any medicine. You will be mentally, physically and spiritually fit.

SOME OF THE COMMONLY USED MUDRAS:

1.NAMASTE MUDRA     


Take a few slow deep breaths. Focus on namaste. Join both the palms and all the fingers so as to make a slight hollow in between. It balances all the elements of our body.

2.GYAN MUDRA OR THE MUDRA OF KNOWLEDGE – This is a very common mudra while meditating.

Join the tip of the index finger with the tip of the thumb. Keep all other fingers straight.

  • It enhances your memory power and concentration.
  • It works on mind and increases self- confidence.
  • It controls anger, stress, depression, reduces anxiety and irritation.
  • It reduces sadness and unhappiness.
  • It works wonder in insomnia.
  • Pain in head can be cured.

3.AKASH MUDRA


Join the tip of middle finger with that of thumb. All other fingers should be straight.
BENEFITS:
  • It improves hearing power.
  • Good for improving intuition.
  • It gives the feeling of clarity when it is missing and the feeling of expansion when you feel restricted.
  • To detoxify the body by eliminating metabolic waste.
  • Regularize heart-beats.
  • Make bones stronger.

4.PRITHVI MUDRA

Join the tip of ring finger with that of thumb. All remaining fingers should be straight.
BENEFITS:

  • Helps in production of vitamins A, B, C, D,E and K in the body.
  • It increases energy and strength of the body.
  • Increases weight of weak persons.
  • Makes body active.
  • Opens mind and improves spiritual power.
  • Improves complexion of skin, brings face radiance, brings youthfulness back, prevents premature greying and helps hair growth- This all can be done by practicing Prithvi mudra for 45 minutes along with Prana mudra for 15 minutes in additional.

5.VARUN MUDRA

This increases the water element of the body.
Join the tip of little finger with that of thumb. Rest of the fingers should be straight.

CAUTION – PEOPLE WITH WATER RETENTION PROBLEM IN THEIR BODY SHOULD PRACTISE THIS MUDRA MODERATELY.

NOW WE WILL TALK ABOUT SOME OF THE
COMMONLY USED THERAPEUTIC MUDRAS


1.APANA  MUDRA –





JOIN RING FINGER TIP AND MIDDLE FINGER TIP WITH THAT OF THUMB TIP. KEEP THE INDEX FINGER AND LITTLE FINGER STRAIGHT.
BENEFITS:

  •         Removes toxin
  •         Boost self confidence
  •         Helps in stomach pain and other stomach problems.
  •         Cures indigestion, gastric disorder.

2.VAYU MUDRA-


TOUCH THE TIP OF THE INDEX FINGER WITH THE BASE OF THE THUMB KEEPING THE REMAINING THREE FINGERS STRAIGHT.
BENEFITS:

  • Air element is maintained. If we are touching the tip of any finger to the base of the thumb we are actually increasing the fire element and balancing that particular element. In this we are actually stabilising air element.
  • For joint-pains, aches except headache, stomach problems etc. Practice has to be stopped once the symptoms have been cured.
  • It improves stiffness in the neck.
  • It helps in paralysis and hysteria.
  • Vayu mudra cures Sciatica.
  • Helps in gout problem.
  • It cures and bring relief in Parkinson's disease.

3.SHUNYA MUDRA-


TOUCH THE TIP OF THE MIDDLE FINGER TO THE BASE OF THE THUMB AND THUMB SHOULD BE PLACED ON THE MIDDLE FINGER. ALL OTHER FINGERS SHOULD BE STRAIGHT.
BENEFITS:

  •         Hearing power increases, Akash level is balanced.
  •         Cures tinnitus.
  •         Disease of gums can be cured.
NOT TO BE DONE WHILE EATING OR WALKING.

4.SHUNYAVAYU MUDRA-


SHUNYA VAYU MUDRA IS THE COMBINATION OF SHUNYA AND VAYU MUDRA.
JOIN TIP OF INDEX FINGER AND THE MIDDLE FINGER TO THE BASE THE THUMB.
IMPORTANT-
Space is decreased by SHUNYA mudra and VAYU element is decreased by VAYU mudra.
BENEFITS:
Done before sleep for 15 minutes induces good sleep.

5.VAYAAN MUDRA-



JOIN THE TIPS OF THE THUMB, MIDDLE FINGER AND INDEX FINGER.

BENEFITS-

·        Controls nervous system.
·        It promotes energy.
·        Helps in awake if you fell asleep.

6.PRANA MUDRA-


JOIN THE TIPS OF THE LITTLE FINGER AND THE RING FINGER TO THE TIP OF THE THUMB. THE OTHER TWO FINGERS SHOULD REMAIN STRAIGHT.
BENEFITS-


  •                        It increases prana of the body.
  •                         It promotes vitality, energy in the body.
  •             Good for eyes.


7.APANA VAYU MUDRA- SANJEEVANI MUDRA


JOIN THE TIP OF THE THUMB WITH TIPS OF RING AND MIDDLE FINGER.  TOUCH THE INDEX FINGER TO THE BASE OF THE THUMB. KEEP THE LITTLE FINGER ALONE STRAIGHT.

BENEFITS-
  •        It prevents heart diseases, heart attacks and chest issues.
  •         Improves blood circulation.
  •         Cures diabetes.

8.SURYA MUDRA-


FOLD THE RING FINGER AND TOUCH THE BOTTOM PORTION OF THE THUMB. REMAINING FINGERS SHOULD BE STRAIGHT.

BENEFITS-
  • ·      Creates heat in the body.
  •         Fire element is maintained.
  •         Help fights cold, flu.
  •         Helps in reducing weight.


IMPORTANT-
THOSE WHO ARE SUFFERING FROM FEVER AND HYPER THYROIDISM SHOULD NOT PRACTICE IT.

9.KIDNEY MUDRA-


The little finger and the ring finger are to be placed at the base of the thumb and thumb should be placed over the two fingers.

BENEFITS-
·        Water content is reduced and heat is increased.
·        Kidney related issues are treated.
·        Running nose and throat issues.

10.MUSHTI MUDRA-


FOLD ALL THE FINGERS OF YOUR HAND INWARDS KEEPING THE THUMB ON THE RING FINGER.

BENEFITS-
It gets rid of accumulated emotions. If feeling very excited or aggressive it balances your emotions.

11.SAMANA MUDRA-


JOIN THE TIP OF ALL THE FINGERS.

BENEFITS-
·        All elements are equally balanced. Hence it is called SAMANA mudra.
·        It helps in relieving pains and body aches. Place this mudra for some time on the point that is paining.

12.DHYANA MUDRA-


PLACE ONE PALM ON THE TOP OF THE OTHER AND TOUCH THE TIP OF BOTH THE THUMBS.

BENEFITS-
Gives energy to the mind and the body.

IMPORTANT-

FOR MEN- right palm should be above the left.
FOR WOMEN- left palm should be above the right.
